Is it a Bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a River in the Sky

Termite Engineers

Termites are destructors aren’t they? After all they eat through the frame of your house and chomp down entire trees.

Not necessarily, some colonies are major ecosystem engineers. For example, African termites built the foundations for the islands in the image, islands that now provide habitat for wide range of species – from elephants to bugs, and trees to grass. Check out the full story from the BBC.

Two Chameleons Duke it Out

There is an element of watching the grass grow in a recently-discovered movie of a battle between two chameleons fighting for the favour of a female – but it does induce a level of fascination.

The Best Way to Store Tomatoes

Once bought from the local store, what is the best way to store tomatoes?

As usual it all depends, and such a topic is guaranteed to start a vigorous argument at a party.

So the folks at The Kitchn set up an experiment to find out – with some interesting results after ten days of storage:

  • On the bench, stem up – barely edible
  • In the open fridge – tasteless
  • In a sealed container in the fridge – yuk
  • On the bench, stem down – good
  • On the bench, stem taped over – perfection.

Apparently, taping the stem prevents rotting agents from getting in, thus allowing development of a tasty, nicely ripe tomato.

Then again, had you planted your tomatoes a few months ago, you would now be able to pick sublime specimens off the vine at the perfect time for eating.
